The Deep Blue Sea: Press Release

The Deep Blue Sea – a classic play by one of the finest playwrights of the 20th Century – will appear at the Cheltenham Playhouse from Wednesday 11th to Saturday 14th November 2015.

The play is set in the early 1950s, when the country was still recovering from the trauma and austerity of World War II.  The writer, Terence Rattigan, has produced a skilful exploration of love within the buttoned-down social mores of post-war Britain.  The Director, Mike Charlton, says “At the time the play was written, the themes of suicide and divorce were much more controversial than they are today; with attempted suicide remaining a criminal offence until 1961”.

The play tells the story of Hester Collyer, younger wife of a High Court Judge, who has embarked on a passionate affair with Freddie Page, a troubled former RAF pilot. Hester has left her life of luxury to move into a dingy London flat with Freddie, who throws Hester’s life into turmoil and leaves her emotionally and physically stranded. For Freddie, the tumultuous mix of fear and excitement that he experienced during the war, no longer seems to be present.

Freddie can never give Hester the stability her husband gave her; yet for her to return to a life without passion would be unbearable.

Of the play, Mike goes on to say that “For its time, it is emotionally revealing, unabashed, and unrepressed; about how it was to live just after the war when people were still very closed up; it is about love and lust; and it remains, for me, a hugely moving experience”.

The Playhouse Company’s Chair, Carol Meredith, says “We have a very skilled director and cast who are bringing this play to the Playhouse stage.  This production honours the 70th anniversary of the end of the second World War, and coincides with the celebration of 70 years since the inauguration of the Cheltenham Playhouse.  We hope that audiences will appreciate the timely reminder of the after-shock of war; of how people strive to return to a sense of normality and, often, do not succeed.”

Terence Rattigan’s plays span the 1930s to the 1970s; he often explored highly sensitive and controversial areas of life, and his themes reflected the social attitudes and outlooks of the time.  His many successful plays include: Flare Path, The Winslow Boy, and The Browning Version.

This modern classic, The Deep Blue Sea, is a perennially moving play showing a profound understanding of the wounded heart.  It was made into a successful film in 2011 starring Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston; and is also part of the National Theatre's 2016 season.

The Deep Blue Sea will be showing at the Cheltenham Playhouse from Wednesday 11th to Saturday 14th November 2015, 7.45pm, with a matinée on Saturday 14th November at 2.30pm. Tickets are available from the Box Office 01242 522852, and on-line at:
