The Deep Blue Sea

11 November 2015 to 14 November 2015

By Terence Rattigan
Directed by Michael Charlton

This classic play, by one of the finest playwrights of the 20th Century, is a skilful exploration of love within the buttoned-down social mores of post-World War II Britain. Hester Collyer, younger wife of a high court judge, has embarked on a passionate affair with Freddie Page, a troubled former RAF pilot. Hester leaves her life of luxury and moves to a dingy London flat with Freddie, who throws Hester's life in turmoil, as their relationship leaves her emotionally and physically stranded.

Freddie can never give Hester the love and stability her husband gave her; yet, to return to a life without passion, would be unendurable. Caught between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is an unbearable place to be.

Made into a successful film in 2011 starring Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston.

An amateur production by arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.
